The right algae for your aquarium

Macroalgae

Macroalgae are a natural asset to any marine aquarium, combining decorative appeal with an important biological function. Species such as Caulerpa, Chaetomorpha, Halimeda or wire algae support the natural reduction of nitrate and phosphate, produce oxygen and create valuable habitat for micro-organisms. Whether in a refugium or directly in the display tank – macroalgae contribute to a stable ecosystem and help promote biological balance naturally.

Care at a glance

What algae need.

Macroalgae prefer nutrient-rich, stable water parameters and sufficient lighting. They bring natural colours and movement to the aquarium, can take up excess nutrients and are ideal for reef tanks and algae refugia.

These details are intended as a guide. Always watch how each individual coral responds and adjust light, flow and placement as needed.

Difficulty

Easy

Most macroalgae are easy to care for and suitable for both beginners and experienced reef keepers.

Light

Moderate to high

Even, moderate flow supplies the algae with nutrients and prevents deposits on them.

Flow

Low to moderate

Even, moderate flow supplies the algae with nutrients and prevents deposits on them.

Feeding

Recommended

Macroalgae need no direct feeding. They use light and dissolved nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate from the aquarium water.

Placement

Depends on species

Depending on the species, macroalgae can be placed in the rockwork, on the substrate or in an algae refugium. Sufficient light and a stable position are important.

Growth

Moderate to fast

Under suitable conditions, many macroalgae grow quickly while contributing to natural nutrient control in the aquarium.

More about algae

Why macroalgae make sense in the reef aquarium

Macroalgae combine decorative looks with practical benefits. They enrich the aquarium with their different colours and growth forms while contributing to a natural habitat for fish and invertebrates.

Many aquarists use macroalgae specifically for natural nutrient control or as part of an algae refugium. Under suitable conditions, many species grow reliably and are easy to maintain with regular pruning.

Macroalgae – Natural Beauty and Biological Benefits in the Reef Aquarium

Macroalgae are much more than just a decorative addition to the reef aquarium. They improve the natural look, offer numerous aquarium inhabitants hiding places and at the same time contribute to a stable biological balance. Whether Caulerpa, Halimeda or Chaetomorpha – every type of alga brings its own characteristics and benefits.

Besides their decorative effect, macroalgae can take up excess nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate and thereby support the natural balance in the aquarium. With their different colours and growth forms, they are suitable for classic reef aquariums as well as algae refugia and natural marine landscapes.

Husbandry and Care – Optimal Conditions for Healthy Algae Growth

Macroalgae grow best in a mature reef aquarium with stable water parameters and a constant supply of nutrients. A complete lack of nutrients can impair growth just as much as permanently elevated levels.

Recommended water parameters:

• Temperature: 24–26 °C
• Salinity: 34–35 PSU or 1.025–1.026
• pH: 8.0–8.4
• Carbonate hardness: 7.5–9 dKH
• Calcium: 400–450 mg/l
• Magnesium: 1,250–1,400 mg/l
• Nitrate: 2–15 mg/l
• Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 mg/l

Most macroalgae prefer moderate to strong lighting and gentle to moderate water movement. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and prevents individual species from overgrowing other areas of the aquarium.

The ideal use of macroalgae in the reef aquarium

Macroalgae can be used both in the main aquarium and in a separate algae refugium. In the reef tank they add natural splashes of colour and offer fish and invertebrates additional hiding places.

In an algae refugium, fast-growing species support natural nutrient export and can thus help stabilise water parameters. Which macroalga is best suited depends on the size of the aquarium, the livestock and the intended purpose.

Light and flow

Most macroalgae prefer moderate to strong lighting and even water movement. Sufficient light supports healthy growth and strong colours, while gentle flow prevents deposits on the algae.

Growth and care

Macroalgae grow at different rates depending on the species. Regular pruning keeps the stock healthy, encourages new growth and prevents uncontrolled spreading in the aquarium or algae refugium.
