SPS corals (Small Polyp Stony Corals) are stony corals with small polyps and a fast-growing skeleton. Genera such as Acropora, Montipora, Millepora, Stylophora or Pocillopora form the foundation of natural coral reefs and are considered the pinnacle of reef keeping by many aquarists. Their intense colours – from neon green and pink to violet – and varied growth forms make SPS reef aquariums particularly impressive.

Keeping SPS corals

SPS corals place high demands on stable water parameters. Recommended are 25–26 °C, 34–35 PSU, a carbonate hardness of 7–8.5 dKH with as little fluctuation as possible, 420–450 mg/l calcium and 1300–1400 mg/l magnesium. Nitrate should be around 2–10 mg/l and phosphate around 0.02–0.08 mg/l. Regular water tests and a reliable supply of trace elements are the foundation for growth and colour.

Light and flow

Most SPS need strong light between 200 and 400 PAR and strong, alternating flow. Good water movement supplies the polyps with food, keeps the surface free of deposits and prevents tissue recession. New corals should be acclimated gradually to the light intensity.

Montipora as a starting point

Montipora are considered comparatively hardy SPS and are a good place to start. Plating species such as Montipora capricornis cope with somewhat less light, while branching forms such as Montipora digitata grow quickly and show strong colours. Acropora are more demanding but reward stable conditions with spectacular colonies.
