Moderate
Montipora are considered comparatively easy-care SPS corals and are also suitable for aquarists with some initial experience of keeping SPS.
Buy high-quality Montipora
Montipora corals are among the most popular SPS corals, prized for their exceptional variety of growth forms and intense colours in green, red, purple, blue, yellow or orange. Whether Montipora digitata, Montipora capricornis or Montipora foliosa – each species brings a unique structure to the reef tank. Successful Montipora care depends on stable water parameters, strong, variable flow and moderate to high lighting. Thanks to their comparatively fast growth and easy propagation from frags, many Montipora species are an excellent introduction to the fascinating world of SPS corals.

Care at a glance
Montipora corals prefer stable water parameters, moderate to high lighting and strong, alternating flow. Under optimal conditions they grow quickly and develop their characteristic colours and impressive growth forms.
These details are intended as a guide. Always watch how each individual coral responds and adjust light, flow and placement as needed.
Montipora are considered comparatively easy-care SPS corals and are also suitable for aquarists with some initial experience of keeping SPS.
Moderate to high lighting promotes healthy growth and intense colours. New corals should be acclimated gradually to high light intensities.
Strong, alternating flow supports metabolism, prevents deposits and promotes even growth.
Montipora obtain most of their energy from their zooxanthellae. Fine plankton or coral food can further support growth.
Montipora should be placed in well-lit areas with sufficient flow. Depending on their growth form, they need enough space to spread undisturbed.
Under stable conditions, Montipora grow quickly and, depending on the species, form branching, plating or encrusting colonies.
More about Montipora
Montipora combine comparatively uncomplicated care with an exceptional variety of colours and growth forms. Plating, branching or encrusting species allow varied reefscapes and add striking accents to the aquarium.
Under stable conditions, Montipora grow quickly and develop intense colours. This makes them some of the most popular stony corals among newcomers to SPS keeping and experienced reef keepers alike.
Montipora are among the most popular SPS corals in the reef aquarium and are considered the ideal introduction to the world of small-polyp stony corals. With their plating, branching or encrusting growth forms, they bring structure, colour and movement to any reef.
From intense green and red to violet, bright orange and multicoloured variants, Montipora offer an impressive variety. Under stable conditions they grow quickly and develop strong colours and characteristic growth forms that make any reef look natural.
Montipora prefer stable water parameters and consistently high water quality. Although they are considered hardier than many Acropora, they too are sensitive to large fluctuations in water parameters.
Recommended guideline values:
• Temperature: 24–26 °C
• Salinity: 34–35 PSU or 1.025–1.026
• pH: 8.0–8.4
• Carbonate hardness: 7.5–8.5 dKH
• Calcium: 420–450 mg/l
• Magnesium: 1,280–1,380 mg/l
• Nitrate: 2–10 mg/l
• Phosphate: 0.02–0.08 mg/l
Montipora prefer moderate to high lighting and strong, alternating flow. Both factors promote colour development, prevent deposits and support even growth.
A stable supply of calcium, carbonate hardness and magnesium is the foundation for strong colours and healthy growth.
Montipora feel particularly at home in the middle to upper part of the reef structure. There they benefit from sufficient light and good water movement that supports their natural development.
Depending on the species, Montipora grow plating, branching or encrusting. Enough space should therefore be planned so that the colonies can spread freely and are not overgrown by other corals.
New Montipora should be acclimated slowly to the existing lighting to avoid stress and light damage during acclimation.
Moderate to high lighting promotes strong colours and healthy growth. Flow should be strong, alternating and as widely dispersed as possible so that all parts of the coral are supplied evenly.
Montipora continuously consume calcium, carbonate hardness and magnesium. An even supply and regular water testing promote fast growth and intense colour development.
