Care at a glance
Most soft corals in this category are hardy and adaptable. They cope well with medium light, moderate flow and slightly elevated nutrient levels and grow quickly.
These details are intended as a guide. Always watch how each individual coral responds and adjust light, flow and placement as needed.
Ideal for beginners – most species forgive minor fluctuations in water parameters.
Medium light (100–200 PAR) is entirely sufficient for most soft corals.
Moderate, alternating flow helps leather corals shed regularly and stay clean.
Most species sustain themselves through light and dissolved nutrients – but occasional feeding does no harm.
Bottom to top depending on the species – with distance from stony corals, as some soft corals release toxins.
Many species grow quickly and are easy to propagate – occasional thinning out makes sense.
More about these soft corals
In this category you will find soft corals that do not belong to the zoanthids (Zoanthus, Palythoa) or mushroom corals (mushrooms). These include leather corals such as Sarcophyton and Sinularia, star polyps such as Clavularia, Capnella, pulsing Xenia and gorgonians. They bring movement and height to the aquarium and are usually very easy to care for.
Leather corals such as Sarcophyton or Sinularia form large, mushroom- or tree-like colonies and are virtually indestructible. Clavularia delights with glowing, star-shaped polyps, Capnella grows like a small tree.
Xenia fascinates with its pulsing polyps – but sometimes grows very fast and should be kept an eye on.
Soft corals are adaptable. The following values have proven themselves:
Unlike SPS, they tolerate somewhat higher nutrient levels well and even benefit from them.
Leather corals can grow large and need space upwards and to the sides. Clavularia and Capnella are well suited to the middle zone, Xenia is best placed on a separate rock so it does not spread across the whole reef.
Keep your distance from stony corals, as some soft corals chemically suppress their neighbours.
Leather corals regularly contract and form a waxy skin that they shed after a few days. This is a natural cleaning process and no cause for concern.
Many soft corals are easy to propagate: leather corals by cutting, Clavularia and Xenia by separating individual polyps or pieces. That way your reef grows all by itself.
