  • Light: low to medium
  • Flow: low to medium
  • Feeding: readily takes target feeding such as mysis or fine pellets, which boosts growth and colour
  • Water: stable parameters, KH 7–8.5 dKH, calcium 400–450 mg/l, magnesium 1,300–1,400 mg/l
  • Experience: hardy, good for beginners with an established reef tank

Acanthastrea · LPS coral

Care at a glance

Typical requirements of the genus – individual specimens may differ.

Difficulty
Easy to moderate – hardy and adaptable.
Light
Low to moderate; the colours look particularly striking under blue light.
Flow
Low to moderate, so the tissue can fully expand.
Placement
Close to the bottom or in the lower reef area, ideally on flat rocks.
Feeding
Readily takes mysis or pellet food in the evening once the feeding tentacles are out.

Acanthastrea – often sold as Acans and now partly classified as Micromussa – impress with bright, often multicoloured polyps and dense, fleshy tissue. The colonies grow slowly into flat mats and are considered rewarding LPS corals for beginners. Under subdued light and gentle flow they show their most intense colours. Targeted feeding in the evening visibly speeds up growth. Keep some distance from other corals, as Acans extend feeding tentacles at night and can sting neighbouring polyps.
