Acanthastrea – often sold as Acans and now partly classified as Micromussa – impress with bright, often multicoloured polyps and dense, fleshy tissue. The colonies grow slowly into flat mats and are considered rewarding LPS corals for beginners. Under subdued light and gentle flow they show their most intense colours. Targeted feeding in the evening visibly speeds up growth. Keep some distance from other corals, as Acans extend feeding tentacles at night and can sting neighbouring polyps.
