Acropora from Fiji
Acropora from Fiji only rarely make it to Germany. They are known for strong, clean colours. Acropora humilis grows in finger-like colonies with thick branches that taper to large, dome-shaped axial corallites. It is considered hardy and likes strong flow.
The photo is a daylight shot with white balance, so you see the colours as they look under normal light, not enhanced under blue light.

Care at a glance
Typical requirements of the genus – individual specimens may differ.
- Difficulty
- Demanding – very stable water parameters required.
- Light
- High and even.
- Flow
- Strong and alternating.
- Placement
- Upper reef zone, standing freely.
- Feeding
- Mainly photosynthetic; trace elements support colouration.
Small-polyp stony corals such as Acropora, Montipora, Stylophora and Millepora form the backbone of natural reefs. They grow in branching, plate-like or encrusting forms and, with the right care, show exceptionally strong colours. Keeping them requires very stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium levels as well as low but measurable nutrients. Strong lighting and powerful, alternating flow are a must. If you test regularly and dose consistently, SPS corals will reward you with rapid growth and intense colours.
