Trachyphyllia · LPS coral

Care at a glance

Typical requirements of the genus – individual specimens may differ.

Difficulty
Easy to moderate – suitable for getting started with LPS corals.
Light
Low to moderate.
Flow
Low, so the tissue is not damaged.
Placement
Lying freely on the sand bed.
Feeding
Readily accepts small pieces of food such as mysis.

Trachyphyllia, often called open brain coral, lives freely on sand and mud flats in the wild. During the day its tissue inflates strongly and shows intense colours that fluoresce under blue light. The coral is hardy but needs a fixed place on the substrate, as its cone-shaped skeleton is not designed for rockwork. Occasional feeding with small frozen food encourages growth and colour. Keep it away from aggressive neighbours so the coral can spread out fully.
