FAQ
What does WYSIWYG mean?
“What you see is what you get”: you receive exactly this specimen from the photo.
Are the colours in the photo real?
The photo was taken under blue light with white balance.
Where do I place the Trachyphyllia?
On the sand bed, not in the rockwork, so it can inflate freely.
How do I place the coral?
Place it a little lower or in a shadier spot at first, then move it to full light step by step over one to two weeks.
Care at a glance
Typical requirements of the genus – individual specimens may differ.
- Difficulty
- Easy to moderate – suitable for getting started with LPS corals.
- Light
- Low to moderate.
- Flow
- Low, so the tissue is not damaged.
- Placement
- Lying freely on the sand bed.
- Feeding
- Readily accepts small pieces of food such as mysis.
Trachyphyllia, often called open brain coral, lives freely on sand and mud flats in the wild. During the day its tissue inflates strongly and shows intense colours that fluoresce under blue light. The coral is hardy but needs a fixed place on the substrate, as its cone-shaped skeleton is not designed for rockwork. Occasional feeding with small frozen food encourages growth and colour. Keep it away from aggressive neighbours so the coral can spread out fully.
