Care at a glance

What zoanthids (Zoanthus) need.

Zoanthids are among the most popular and easiest-to-keep inhabitants of the reef aquarium. With stable water parameters, moderate lighting and alternating flow, they develop intense colours and form dense, attractive colonies over time.

These details are intended as a guide. Always watch how each individual coral responds and adjust light, flow and placement as needed.

Difficulty

Easy

Zoanthus are hardy and adaptable animals that are ideal for beginners and experienced reef keepers alike.

Light

Low to moderate

Moderate lighting provides strong colours and healthy growth. Many species also cope well with somewhat stronger lighting.

Flow

Low to moderate

Alternating, moderate flow keeps the polyps clean and supports full opening of the colony.

Feeding

Recommended

Zoanthus obtain most of their energy from their zooxanthellae. Additional feeding is usually not necessary.

Placement

Depends on species

Depending on their light requirements, zoanthids can be placed in the lower, middle or upper part of the reef. Slow acclimation to new lighting conditions is recommended.

Growth

Fast

Under stable conditions, Zoanthus quickly form new polyps and grow into dense, colourful colonies.

More about zoanthids

Why Zoanthus are so popular

Hardly any coral group offers a comparable variety of colours and patterns to Zoanthus. From classic green variants to rare designer morphs, they create striking splashes of colour in the reef.

Under stable conditions, zoanthids keep growing and form dense colonies over time. This makes them suitable both as an eye-catcher in the foreground and for naturally aquascaping larger areas of the reef.

Zoanthids (Zoanthus) – A Wealth of Colour for Your Reef Aquarium

Zoanthids, also known as Zoanthus, are among the most popular corals in the reef aquarium. With their countless colour morphs, delicate polyps and dense colony growth, they bring impressive colours and structure to any reef.

From bright green and orange to intense blues and spectacular rainbow and ultra morphs, Zoanthus offer almost unlimited aquascaping possibilities. Thanks to their hardy nature, many species are suitable for beginners and experienced reef keepers alike and combine excellently with LPS and SPS corals.

Husbandry and Care – Ideal Conditions for Zoanthus

Zoanthids prefer stable water parameters and good water quality. They are considered comparatively easy to care for and, under constant conditions, reliably grow into dense colonies.

Recommended water parameters:

• Temperature: 24–26 °C
• Salinity: 34–35 PSU or 1.025–1.026
• pH: 8.0–8.4
• Carbonate hardness: 7.5–9 dKH
• Calcium: 400–450 mg/l
• Magnesium: 1,250–1,400 mg/l
• Nitrate: 5–15 mg/l
• Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 mg/l

Low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate, alternating flow promote full polyp opening and intense colours. Under stable conditions, Zoanthus continuously form new polyps and slowly spread across the reef rock.

The ideal spot in the reef aquarium

Zoanthus can be placed flexibly in the lower, middle or upper part of the aquarium. What matters are the individual light requirements of each colour morph and even, indirect flow.

Many aquarists place zoanthids on separate rocks or small islands. This makes natural growth easier to control and lets the colonies develop undisturbed without overgrowing neighbouring corals.

Light and flow

Low to moderate lighting supports strong colours and healthy growth. Flow should be alternating and not too strong so that all polyps can open fully.

Growth and propagation

Zoanthus reproduce by forming new polyps and, under optimal conditions, can quickly develop dense colonies. Enough space makes natural spreading easier and creates a harmonious overall look in the aquarium.
