Buy premium Lobophyllia and Symphyllia
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia corals impress with their thick, fleshy tissue, distinctive brain-like structure and intense colours in green, red, orange, pink or rainbow. Successful Lobophyllia care and Symphyllia care depend on stable water parameters, moderate lighting and gentle to moderate flow. Regular feeding with high-quality frozen or coral food supports healthy growth, strong polyps and intense colouration. Because of their nocturnal feeding tentacles, leaving enough space to neighbouring corals is recommended.

Care at a glance
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia corals prefer stable water parameters, moderate lighting and gentle to moderate flow. With enough space and constant conditions, they develop strong colours, fleshy polyps and healthy growth.
These details are intended as a guide. Always watch how each individual coral responds and adjust light, flow and placement as needed.
With stable water parameters, Lobophyllia and Symphyllia are considered hardy LPS corals and are also suitable for ambitious beginners.
Moderate lighting supports intense colouration and full polyp expansion. New corals should be acclimated slowly to stronger lighting.
Gentle, indirect flow keeps the coral clean and supports polyp expansion without stressing the delicate tissue.
Regular feeding with mysis, artemia or special coral food can further promote growth, colour development and vitality.
Place with enough distance from neighbouring corals so that the fleshy polyps can expand undisturbed and no injuries from sweeper tentacles occur.
Under stable conditions, Lobophyllia and Symphyllia grow steadily and develop impressive, massive colonies over time.
More about Lobophyllia and Symphyllia
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia are often confused because of their similar growth form. Both belong to the so-called brain corals and have large, fleshy polyps with intense colours.
While Lobophyllia often form more pronounced, clearly separated valleys, Symphyllia often look more closed and show more flowing structures. Both genera impress with their exceptional range of colours and, with stable water parameters, develop into long-lived eye-catchers in the reef aquarium.
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia are among the most impressive large-polyp LPS corals in the reef aquarium. With their distinctive, brain-like growth forms, strong colours and fleshy tissue, they add impressive accents to any reef.
From bright green and red to orange and multicoloured rainbow variants, these corals offer enormous variety. Thanks to their comparatively hardy nature, they are suitable for advanced beginners and experienced reef keepers alike.
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia prefer stable water parameters and consistently high water quality. Large fluctuations in carbonate hardness or salinity in particular should be avoided.
Recommended guideline values:
• Temperature: 24–26 °C
• Salinity: 34–35 PSU or 1.025–1.026
• pH: 8.0–8.4
• Carbonate hardness: 7.5–9 dKH
• Calcium: 400–450 mg/l
• Magnesium: 1,250–1,400 mg/l
• Nitrate: 5–15 mg/l
• Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 mg/l
These LPS corals prefer low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate, indirect flow. Regular but not excessive water movement supports full tissue expansion and prevents deposits.
Occasional feeding with mysis, artemia or special LPS food can further promote growth, tissue development and colour intensity.
Lobophyllia and Symphyllia feel particularly at home in the lower to middle part of the aquarium. Many aquarists place them directly on the sand bed or on flat rock plates, where the tissue can expand freely.
Enough distance from neighbouring corals is important, as the polyps expand considerably during the day and can occasionally form sweeper tentacles at night. An open spot reduces injuries and promotes healthy development.
New corals should be acclimated slowly to the existing lighting to avoid stress and tissue recession during acclimation.
Low to moderate lighting supports strong colours and healthy growth. Flow should be gentle to moderate and move the tissue slightly without putting constant stress on the coral.
Targeted feeding with mysis, artemia or special LPS food can promote growth and colour development. Under stable conditions, Lobophyllia and Symphyllia develop strong tissue and impress with their intense colours for many years.
